초등학교 몇학년으로 보낼까? -학년 다운그레이드에 관해서
몇 학년으로 보낼 것인가
미국 초등학교에 자녀를 보낼 때 고민되는 것 중의 하나가 바로 어느 학년으로 아이를 보내야 하는가 하는 문제입니다. 미국의 경우 기본적인 학제가 5-3-4로 6-3-3을 유지하고 있는 차이 외에도, 한 학년에 입학가능한 연령을 계산하는 방식 자체도 다르기 때문에 한국에서 다니던 학년과 다른 학년으로 아이를 보내야하는 경우가 발생합니다.
생일에 따른 학년(2020~2021학기, 조지아주 Oconee Country)
통상 생일이 8월 1일부터 이듬해 7월31일생까지가 한 한년을 구성합니다. 저의 경우에 큰 아이가 2007년 2월 13일 생이었기 때문에 한국에서는 중학교 1학년을 마치고 온 상태였습니다. 중학교 2학년은 미국에서는 7학년이라고 할 수 있는데, 미국 기준으로는 그 생년월일에 해당할 경우 8학년에 해당됐습니다. 하지만 저희 같은 경우에는 아이가 영어에 익숙하지 않다는 점, 그래서 조금이라도 쉬운 교과과정을 듣게 하기 위해서는 8학년 보다는 7학년으로 가는 것이 좋겠다고 생각했습니다. 또 만약 지금 8학년으로 들어갈 경우 미들에 한 학기를 다니고 바로 9학년으로 진학해야 하는데, 9학년은 고등학교에 해당돼 한 학기만에 학교를, 그것도 고등학교로 옮겨야 하는 점도 고려했습니다. 이러한 점 등을 종합적으로 판단해 저는 아이를 7학년으로 한 학년을 다운그레이드 해줄 것을 몇몇 학교측에 요청해 봤습니다.
미국의 경우 앞서 언급한 것처럼 학교마다 제각기 다른 기준으로 판단하기 때문에 제가 갈 카운티 후보 내의 몇몇 중학교에 아이의 다운그레이드를 요청하는 메일을 보냈습니다. 예상대로 어떤 학교에서는 엄격하게 생일을 기준으로 8학년으로 가야한다는 답변을 준 곳도 있었고, 반면에 오히려 영어가 익숙하지 않을 경우 다운그레이드를 권장한다는 답변을 준 학교도 있었습니다. 비슷한 메일을 영어로 써야 할 연수자가 계실 것으로 판단해, 참고용으로 제가 학교에 문의한 내용과 학교에서 온 답신 메일은 그대로 옮겨 적었습니다.

I am writing this letter to consult you about my children’s admission into your school.
All the children residing nearby my future residence(Blackstone Way, Watkinsville, GA) are students of 000 school, and their respective parents have recommended your school for the high quality of education imparted. My wife and I have heard a lot of good about your school from my predecessors, and thus would like to enlist my kids for your school and check what needs to be done to be a member of your school in advance.
I have 3 kids, one daughter and two sons. My daughter, Lee Yun seo is currently in 7th grade in Korea(Her birth date is Feb 2007). My elder son is 10 years old and in the 4th grade in Korea. (His birth date is Oct 2010), and the youngest son is 6 years old. (His birth date is Apr 2015) My two sons seem to have no problem in deciding which grade they will join considering their birth date, but I want to know if my daughter’s downgrade of school year to 7th grade is possible.

However, considering the total time period she has been exposed to English and her current level of English, as a parent, I am afraid that she may experience a very hard time in adjusting herself to a totally new environment. Especially in this unusual pandemic situation, I am also concerned that there will be many restrictions in interacting with other colleagues in malcom bridge middle school that is essential to acquire foreign language skills in a short time.
Moreover due to the Covid19 here in South Korea, my daughter could not get proper education she was supposed to get as 7th grader, partly because of lack of preparation for on-line class other than English. She is still attending school just once a week without proper on-line education on many subjects including English.
The current pandemic situation seems to change everything we are familiar with, and those changes may be felt much bigger to middle school girl who has to face a totally new environment. So I wish you can allow her to downgrade her school year one step so that she can adapt quickly and happily to the new school system and language.

2. 다운그레이드가 불가능하다는 학교측 답변
Thank you so much for reaching out regarding enrollment for your children. Below I have included a link to our county website’s registration page – it has a link to our online enrollment and lists all the documents you will need to present for registration. Unfortunately, you are correct about your oldest child. We have to enroll students according to their age and date of birth, and if your daughter was born in Feb of 2007, we will have to enroll her as an 8th grader. You will need to reach out to Malcom Bridge Elementary regarding your two younger students.

So sorry I was not able to respond sooner. We have had so many wonderful students from South Korea who have shared their culture and language with us. Many times students coming from other countries are in the same situation as your daughter. We usually do recommend that she start in 7th grade. We have found that if we put her in the second semester of 8th, she will not have had any of the material that we would cover in the first semester of 8th.
We register our new students online. You will find this information on our district website. Once you start your registration, you can register all three of you children in the same account that you will create. The things we will need are proof of residency (two current ones close to their start of school) birth certificate or passport, any grades or information from previous school, immunizations on GA form 3231 and a basic eye, ear and dental screening on form 3300. You have 30 days after your children start school to complete the health records. This needs to be done in Georgia. The forms will be provided by a health professional or health department here. They will transfer the information that you bring. I suggest that you make sure you bring the most up to date immunization records. I can help you once you are here.
Our ESOL department will evaluate your daughter as will the elementary school for your sons. Just to see how much support they will need in the school.
I would wait until you are closer to coming to Georgia to register. We are a public school system so everyone is welcome. There will always be a space.

다운그레이드 실패…돌아보니 다행
학년 다운그레이를 원했기 때문에 다운그레이드를 추천한다는 학교로 진학을 하려고 했으나, 다른 여건이 맞지 않아 결과적으로는 다운그레이를 허락하지 않은 중학교로 진학을 하게 됐습니다. 여러 모로 걱정이 많았으나 다운그레이드 없이 8학년으로 아이를 보내고 한 학기를 지낸 지금은 다운그레이를 하지 않은 것이 다행이라고 생각하게 되었습니다.
이유는 다음과 같습니다. 우선 수학 수준입니다. 미국의 경우에 한국보다 전반적인 수학의 진도가 느린 편이기 때문에 한국 학생들이 수학에서 좋은 점수를 받습니다. 만약에 7학년으로 다운그레이드를 했더라면 한국으로 돌아갔을 때 한국의 수학 진도를 따라가기가 더 힘들었을 것입니다. 그나마 8학년으로 들어갔고 미국에 들어온 지 한 학기만에 9학년인 고등학교에 들어가면서 수학의 수준별 선택이 가능해졌기에(미국의 고등학교의 경우 수학 및 과학 등을 대학교처럼 수준에 맞춰 선택이 가능함) 한국에 돌아가는 것을 염두에 두고 수학 진도를 맞추는 것이 가능했습니다.
다음으로 고등학교에 진학하면서 새로운 학교로 진학하기에 새로운 또래 그룹을 형성하기가 쉬웠습니다. 초등학교든 중학교든 학기 중간에 들어가서 또래 그룹에 들어가고 친구들을 만드는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 이미 친한 친구들 그룹이 만들어져 있기 때문입니다. 이런 점을 고려하면 저희 딸아이처럼 중학교에서 한 한기를 다니고, 새로운 학교인 고등학교에 진학하면서 아직 서로 친한 그룹들이 형성되기 전에 또래 그룹을 사귀면서 학교 생활에 훨씬 쉽게 적응할 수 있었던 것 같습니다.
마지막으로 우려했던 영어의 경우, 제가 실제로 다운그레이드를 통해서 아이를 한 학년 낮춰 보내보지는 못했기 때문에 직접 비교는 힘들지만, 결과적으로 7학년과 8학년의 영어 수준이 크게 차이가 나는 것으로 판단되지는 않았습니다. 오히려 고등학교의 경우 과목별로 수준에 따라 과목 선택이 가능했기 때문에, 만약에 언어와 관련된 과목들(가령 Language Art)에서 어려움을 느낀다면 고등학교에서 비교적 쉬운 수준의 수업을 선택할 수 있었기에 오히려 편한점이 있었다고 생각합니다.
